EN: The Raft

This staged photograph, referring to the famous painting The Raft of Medusa (1817–1818) by Théodore Géricault, examines the themes of hope, helplessness and desire that affect us all at this difficult time. In this depiction of the seemingly banal scene of a lightbulb replacement, the lightbulb in the photograph becomes a symbol of the last source of light before the darkness arrives. The subjects in the photograph are stylized as intellectuals faced with a problem never before encountered. The scene examines the individual characters and their way of solving the problem, while capturing the tension of the moment that leads to the culmination of the whole action. In this photograph, I was inspired by the works of prominent artists working with photography, especially by Jeff Wall’s narrative photographs, Gregory Crewdson’s filmic visions, and digitally enhanced works by Dean West.

Inscenovaná fotografie, odkazující na slavný obraz Vor Medúzy (1817–1818) malíře Théodora Géricaulta, rozebírá témata hledání naděje, bezmoci a touhy, která se v této složité době dotýkají nás všech. Ve vyobrazení zdánlivě banální scény výměny žárovky se žárovka na fotografii stává symbolem posledního zdroje světla před příchodem tmy. Subjekty na fotografii jsou stylizovány do pozice intelektuálů postavených před problém, se kterým se do té doby nikdy nesetkali. Scéna zkoumá jednotlivé postavy a jejich způsob řešení problému a zároveň se snaží zachytit napětí okamžiku vedoucího k vyvrcholení děje. V této práci navazuji na díla významných fotografů, zejména narativní fotografie Jeffa Walla, filmem ovlivněné obrazy Gregoryho Crewdsona a digitálně retušovaná díla Deana Westa.
